Coming together for female hockey!

When: October 4-6, 2019

From Oct. 4-6, 2019, the International Ice Hockey Federation will lead the way on the ninth year of World Girls’ Ice Hockey Weekend, with dozens of federations around the world taking part. The goal of this weekend is to have events from coast to coast to coast that recruit, retain and engage female players, coaches, officials and fans – old and new. This event aims to celebrate and grow the female game, and unite Canadians through grassroots programming led by female hockey associations, minor hockey associations and communities.

GETTING INVOLVED

From Aug. 1 to Sept. 10, hosts can register their event HERE. Hockey Canada will supply gifts to approved events on a first come, first approved basis. Events registered prior to Sept. 10 will be entered into a draw to win a Team Canada jersey autographed by Canada’s National Women’s Team that competed at the 2019 IIHF Women’s World Championship.

Groups eligible to host events include:

  • sanctioned teams,
  • female hockey associations/minor hockey associations,
  • members,
  • community groups
  • classrooms/schools.

Hosts can get involved in the weekend in a variety of different ways. Events supported by Hockey Canada must meet at least one of the three main purposes of the event weekend – recruitment, retention or engagement.

The following types of events are eligible for support from Hockey Canada:

On-Ice

  • Recruitment events: Hold a learn-to-play event to recruit new players to your female program!
  • Skills development sessions: Utilize the Hockey Canada Network to host a skills development session or test your team’s skills by hosting a skills competition!
  • Tournament or jamboree: Incorporate an additional World Ice Girls’ Hockey Weekend-dedicated activity into your schedule.
  • 3 v 3 tournaments: Within a team or MHA, host an afternoon of 3 vs 3 games.
  • Free skate: Schedule some ice time for players to come out and get additional skating practice in. Encourage players to bring a friend.

Off-Ice

  • Skill development sessions: Registered players take part in an off-ice skills development session. Utilize the Hockey Canada Network off-ice programs or take part in a team joga/yoga session.
  • Floorball/ball hockey: Book a local gym or court space and practice skills!
  • Road hockey: On a closed road or playground space free from traffic, play some road hockey!

Education & Celebration

  • Skill development seminar: Host a coaching clinic, officiating clinic or other skill development seminar.
  • Classroom lesson plans: Utilize Hockey Canada lesson plans with a focus on the female game in a classroom or have a guest speaker from a local MHA or member branch talk about the female game.
  • Watch a local game: Gather your team, wear your jerseys and head to a game! If you can arrange a shout-out from the hosts or play a mini-game – even better! See if your team can have a table to promote your association and spread the word about female hockey!
  • Celebration/party: Host a kick-off event for your team or have a celebration before, after or in-between any on-ice or off-ice events. (Any celebration events held in private residences will not be approved.)

*All events are subject to approval and must fall within sanctioning guidelines from the governing member to be considered an official World Girls’ Ice Hockey Weekend event. Hockey Canada will supply gifts to approved events on a first come, first approved basis.

TEAM CANADA EAST UNVEILS SELECTION CAMP ROSTER FOR 2019 WORLD JUNIOR A CHALLENGE
44 players to compete for roster spot at international showcase in northeastern B.C.

CALGARY, Alta. – The Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) and NHL Central Scouting have identified a list of 44 players who have earned invites to Team Canada East selection camp in advance of the 2019 World Junior A Challenge in Dawson Creek, B.C.

From Aug. 7-9, 44 Team Canada East hopefuls will gather at the Benson Centre in Cornwall, Ont., for three days of games and practices as part of the evaluation process.

The players were selected from the CJHL’s five eastern Junior A leagues: the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL), Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL), Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL), Ligue de hockey junior AAA du Québec (LHJAAAQ) and Maritime Hockey League (MHL). Team Canada East staff, led by head coach Martin Dagenais (Embrun, Ont./Ottawa, CCHL) and director of operations Mark Grady (Orleans, Ont.), will use the camp to evaluate the prospects before selecting the final roster for the 2019 World Junior A Challenge.

“This marks the first year Team Canada East will host a summer selection camp, which will help the team staff evaluate and select its roster earlier than previous years and continue to evaluate the players throughout the season,” said Brent Ladds, president of the CJHL. “We are excited to start the evaluation process for Team Canada East next week, and we look forward to watching both Canadian teams compete for a gold medal at the World Junior A Challenge in December.”

Team Canada East will kick off the tournament against Russia on Dec. 7 at 2 p.m. MT when the World Junior A Challenge heads to Dawson Creek for the first time.

Of the 13 gold medal games at the World Junior A Challenge, 10 have featured at least one Canadian team. Team Canada East will look to earn its first gold medal, having won silver five times (2006, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2016) and bronze once (2008).

HOCKEY CANADA ANNOUNCES ROSTER FOR 2019 HLINKA GRETZKY CUP
22 players to represent Canada in Breclav, Czech Republic and Piestany, Slovakia

CALGARY, Alta. – Twenty-two of the nation’s top young players have earned the opportunity to represent their country as part of Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team at the 2019 Hlinka Gretzky Cup in Breclav, Czech Republic and Piestany, Slovakia, Aug. 5-10.

Hockey Canada finalized its roster Tuesday following a five-day selection camp that saw 44 players participate in on- and off-ice sessions, including three intrasquad games, at WinSport’s Canada Olympic Park in Calgary.

The roster consists of two goaltenders, seven defencemen and 13 forwards, including two players who were a part of Canada’s National Men’s Under-18 Team that competed at the 2019 IIHF U18 World Championship in Sweden last April (Drysdale, Hunt). Twenty-one of the 22 players participated in the 2018 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Saint John and Quispamsis, N.B. The lone exception was Hendrix Lapierre (Gatineau, Que./Chicoutimi, QMJHL), who was unable to participate due to injury.

“We were pleased with the level of competition at selection camp, and our staff is confident in the 22 players that have earned their spot on Team Canada for the Hlinka Gretzky Cup,” said Brad McEwen (Whitewood, Sask.), head scout for the Program of Excellence. “The skill and intensity showed by all 44 players at camp made our decisions difficult, but we know our players and staff will embrace the opportunity to wear the Maple Leaf as we look to bring home a gold medal.”

The selections were made by McEwen, Alan Millar (Tottenham, Ont./Moose Jaw, WHL), the U18 lead for the Program of Excellence management group, and Ben Shutron (Orleans, Ont.), manager of men’s national teams for Hockey Canada. Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team coaching staff, including head coach Michael Dyck (Lethbridge, Alta./Vancouver, WHL) and assistant coaches Mario Duhamel (Saint-Bruno, Que./Ottawa, OHL) and Dennis Williams (Stratford, Ont./Everett, WHL), provided input into the final player selections.

Canada will face off against Slovakia in pre-tournament action on Saturday, Aug. 3 in Piestany before moving on to Breclav, where it opens the 2019 Hlinka Gretzky Cup against Finland on Monday, Aug. 5 at 9:30 a.m. ET/6:30 a.m. PT. All Team Canada tournament games will be broadcast by TSN and RDS; please check local listings for details.

In 2018, the tournament was rebranded as the Hlinka Gretzky Cup and co-hosted by Edmonton and Red Deer, Alta. Canada captured gold on home ice, defeating Sweden 6-2 in the gold medal game.

Canada has won gold 22 times in 28 years of summer under-18 competition, along with two silver medals and one bronze.
